I want to start off by saying distemper is not always a death sentence. Along my extensive search, I did find several people who had a puppy not only survive distemper, but survive even after the pup reached the seizure stage. Some with minimal after affects, like a back leg that is a bit slower than the rest. Somewhat out of sync. Something I should note is that most of them caught it very, very early. The key is knowing what to look for. At the first tiny could-be distemper symptom, it needs to be treated as if it were!  And in treating distemper you have to be diligent! Treating this virus is very intense.

I have more information on distemper. Contact me for more details- here are some quick pointers!

-Keep animal warm! Absolutely no drafts! An old flannel shirt with armholes cut out will      work to cover its chest while outside.

-Parvaid! Its has a host of herbal ingredients to boost immune system to beat                 distemper, and make your pup more comfortable!

-Check for fever- if fever is present- fast animal on vegetable or chicken broth. No          solid foods while in this stage! You can give a little honey to keep its blood sugar up.     Just put a small amount on your fingertip or a few drops in vegetable or chicken             broth.

-Administer pedialyte as mentioned in parvo section of this site.

-Oatmeal, or an "oat tea" given at least once a day will help protect the animals               nervous. There is no particular recipe for "oat tea" I just took a handful of oatmeal         (plain rolled oats) and run water through your hands, squeezing all the water through      the oatmeal.  Avena Sativa (common oat) tincture given for small dogs 4-7 drops in one     tablespoon on water, and to large dogs 8-9 drops in one tablespoon of water will do     the same.

    - Vitamin B complex 10-25mg will coat the nervous system.

-Vitamin C based on dogs weight/bowel tolerance give 1500-4000mg vitamin C 4x a day. I    f pup gets diarrhea, or diarrhea worsens, lower the dose just a bit

-Beneficial herbs: Skullcap, Blue vervain (verbena), valerian, chamomile, slippery elm,         there are a few more I can inform you of, and give you some good doseage                     references. There are also some homeopathic things you can do to aid recovery.         Email me for information!
