For a good balanced diet dogs should have a variety or meats, fruits and veggies! Its not as bad as it sounds! really!
MEAT!
Good raw meats
- Pork or beef ribs- Chicken
-drumsticks, wings, backs (I dont like giving these, they are too bony and messy!)
- quarters
-necks
- liver (organic ONLY, liver filters toxins! If you get non organic, you are feeding your dog a load of toxicity!) Liver is rich in vitamins, but only feed one or 2 a week
- breast, but since breast are lean make sure you feed more than just this!
I cut breast into chunks and feed it with a chicken neck and a liver
-Lamb (very rich, not for beginners! and in smaller amounts!)
- Beef
-stew meat is already cut into chunks, and has plenty of fat on it!
- any steak cut, except chop steak.
-brisket
- hamburger meat only if you have to! Sparingly! This is acceptable to slip your dog a vitamin in or something, its not meal material. Minced meat isn't very good for dogs
- ribs
-beef tripe (green, not bleached, walmart style!)
-Pork
-roast
-necks
-ribs
Ehh... pretty much anything except mince meat and non organic livers. Think about what a dog would eat in the wild! Although they would eat anything in the wild, I feel those are the best and healthiest ones to give them. I give Maxie a variety by buying the meat and before freezing them i put them in freezer bags. I put a handful of whatever chicken in the freezer bag then put a rib bone with some stew meat in a regular sandwich bag and stick it in the freezer bag with the chicken (its good to keep red meat and poultry separate, thats why i put a red meat in a bag-inside the freezer bag!) I put enough meat to feed her for a day. At any given time ill have 5-8 of these bags and on the weekends I do it all over again!
FRUITS/VEGETABLES
Ill call this "Healthy Goop" there are many variations of this. Here is s Maxies favorite!
makes about a weeks worth when added to meat for a 40lb dog (that eats like a cow!)
3 heads of romaine lettuce
1 apple
1 large ripe banana
2 handfuls of strawberries
5-8 oz spinach
sometimes i throw in a SMALL amount of jicama
2 med chunks of broccoli- about a cup and a half
6-10 large organic carrots
small handful of sweet peas
2 tlbs apple cider vinegar
1 tsp honey
1 jumbo or 2 small raw eggs
1-2 tsp olive oil or flax oil
tablespoon of raw rolled oats
I chop off the bottom inch or two of the thick broccoli stem, use the whole head of romaine except most of the middle thick white stems (too bitter!) core the apple. cut the tops off the strawberries and carrots, peel the banana and throw it all in the food processor. it works better to put the eggs, ACV, and honey in a cup together that way when you are blending all of those dry ingredients you can slowly add a little moisture! Also use one of the eggshells (make sure you blend it well) its full of calcium. my husband actually tasted this... haha its pretty good. Maxie licks her bowl clean
EXTRAS!
For my Maxie I add 1/4 teaspoon sodium ascorbate (vitamin c) to her weekly mixture. 1-400 iu vitamin e capsule, 1-10,000 iu vitamin a (i drop these in with the acv and just blend the whole thing usually) also i open up 2 50mcg vitamin b caps and pour it in.
flax seed oil, or Salmon oil. I always squirt about a tablespoon of flax seed oil on Maxie's breakfast. Excellent for their coat and very good for their heart :D
oats protect the nervous system. Kind of like a jacket in the winter. They cant always promise a healthy nervous system (like a jacket doesn't always keep you from getting a cold in the winter) but it WILL protect and coat them to prevent damage when they get older, if they have epilepsy, distemper or from other nervous system ailments. To the recipe above add 1/2 -1 cup of plain rolled oats (oatmeal...)
If I'm feeling frisky ill cook 1/2 cup of brown rice or a small sweet potato or SMALL baking potato and blend that in too. Some dogs may have allergies to grains and carbs arent as good for your dog as fruits and vegetables, but variety is also good. A little rice or potato wont be bad for them!
VARIATION
Some people do not want to give their dogs broccoli because of pesticides used on them. If you use organic, there is no problem. If you cant find organic then just omit the broccoli. You don't have to replace it, theres no science to it! Your dog will appreciate different texture from time to time!
You can add a medium clove of garlic (be careful- garlic is from the onion family) it is good for removing parasites, easing diarrhea, and good for their heart!
You can add or remove anything you want to the healthy goop. I wouldnt recommend adding too much more fruit but you can replace it with mango or pears. No raspberries or blackberries! These arent good for them. ABSOLUTELY NO ONION!
